2024-25 Year in Review
Fredericton, NB - As the 2024–25 season comes to a close, the Green & Gold showed strong commitment and effort across every sport. From courts to fields, trails to rinks, STU student-athletes represented the university with focus and determination. With new players, key matchups, and national competition, it was a season that highlighted the hard work happening across Tommies Nation.
Cross Country
The Cross-Country team laced up for another strong season, featuring 12 determined runners proudly competing for the Green & Gold. The team participated in three meets this season, including a special home event hosted at Fredericton’s beautiful Odell Park. The season concluded with a strong showing at the ACAA Championships, held at Holland College. Their continued growth and commitment to excellence have laid the groundwork for even bigger strides next season.
Women’s Rugby
In what was a transition year for Women’s Rugby, the Tommies welcomed a fresh wave of new talent alongside key returning veterans. Although the team showed promising efforts in early matches, they ultimately bowed out before the playoffs. Despite the ups and downs, the foundation is being built, and with head coach Gabe Kim at the helm, there’s optimism that this team will only grow stronger and more competitive in the seasons to come.
Women’s Soccer
The Tommies Women’s Soccer squad fought hard in an incredibly tight ACAA race. With nearly every team in playoff contention late into the year, STU secured some big wins and showed great form throughout the campaign. However, a string of ties late in the season kept the Tommies just shy of a playoff berth. This talented group returns the bulk of its roster next year—poised to make a real run in 2025–26.
Men’s Soccer
The 2024 season was nothing short of historic for the STU Tommies Men’s Soccer team. Dominating the ACAA with an undefeated 11-0-1 record, the team swept accolades at the ACAA banquet, including three First Team All-Conference selections, ACAA Player of the Year, and ACAA Coach of the Year honors. Their dream run continued with a thrilling victory over UKC in the ACAA final, securing both the championship and a spot at CCAA Nationals on home turf.
At Nationals, STU battled through tough matchups but delivered a massive win in their final match over Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface. A special congratulations goes to head coach JR, who capped off his 11th season with a legendary CCAA Coach of the Year title. It was a proud and unforgettable season for the program and for STU.
Women’s Hockey
The Tommies Women’s Hockey team continued their tradition of excellence with a top-three finish in a fiercely competitive AUS conference. Blending a strong group of first-year players with seasoned veterans, STU carved out a third-place finish and entered the playoffs with confidence.
Team captain Katia Pelowich brought international prestige to the program, representing Canada at the 2025 FISU Games in Torino, Italy, where she earned a silver medal. In playoffs, the Tommies swept SMU in the AUS quarterfinals before taking on STFX in an intense five-game semifinal showdown. The series didn’t go STU’s way, but the season showcased the program’s elite level and bright future.
Women’s Volleyball
In her debut season as head coach, Kim Colpitts brought new energy and leadership to the Women’s Volleyball program. After a slow start in the standings first semester, the Tommies caught fire in the second half, racking up nine straight wins and storming into the playoffs as one of the most dangerous teams in the league.
STU took down host Holland College in their opening playoff match but fell to UNBSJ in a competitive semifinal. Recognition followed soon after: Kathleen Boyle earned ACAA Player of the Year, and Colpitts was rightfully named ACAA Coach of the Year, definitely a great year for Head Coach Kim—setting the stage for a promising future.
Men’s Volleyball
The Men’s Volleyball team delivered another stellar season with a 16-4 regular season record, continuing to build on their tradition of excellence. With three players earning spots on the ACAA All-Conference team, the Tommies marched their way to the gold medal game at the ACAA Championships.
Though they fell to long-time rivals Sainte-Anne in four hard-fought sets, the team has much to be proud of—and with most of the roster returning, the Tommies are already eyeing redemption next season.
Women’s Basketball
With a young but hungry roster, the Women’s Basketball team embraced the challenge of a deep ACAA field. Finishing the regular season 10-8, STU secured a playoff spot and turned heads with their effort at the ACAA Championships. Though they came up just short in a gritty semifinal against MSVU, the Tommies bounced back in a big way at Nationals.
In front of the home crowd, the Green & Gold avenged their ACAA loss by taking down the MSVU Mystics—the eventual conference champs—in a statement national victory that sent a powerful message about this team's potential.
Men’s Basketball
The Men’s Basketball squad came out of the gate with intensity in one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory. Battling every weekend, the Tommies posted an 8-10 record and earned a spot in the ACAA playoffs.
Their quarterfinal matchup against Crandall was a hard-fought affair, with the Tommies showing their grit until the final buzzer. With this season under their belt and a solid core returning, STU is set to be a force next year.
The 2024–25 season brought unforgettable moments for STU Athletics. From national stages to local battles, every team, every athlete, and every coach contributed to what made this season so special.
