Tommies Weekend Recap Nov. 12-16
Five St. Thomas University (STU) squads were in action during week 11. Many of those teams played their games on the road. Only one squad suited up for a game in front of the STU faithful. All of the teams found the victorious side of the scoreboard. Your Tommies used the games to build on their early season success.
Volleyball Teams gets the weekend shutout
STU’s Women’s and Men’s Volleyball teams collected the shutout. Each team played two games last weekend. Three of the games took place on the road. The other match was at home on Saturday afternoon. Your Tommies failed to drop a single set over their four games.
The Women’s Volleyball team swept their games last weekend. STU kicked off proceedings with a 3-0 win over the UKC Blue Devils Saturday afternoon on home court. During the first two sets, the team held UKC to under 20 points. The third set ended in a two-point Tommies victory. Rookie Ella Estey led the charge with four kills and eight digs.
Sunday was much of the same. Your Tommies hit the road for an interprovincial road showdown against the Crandall Chargers in Moncton. STU took the match three sets to nothing, their second victory on the weekend.
STU’s Men’s Volleyball team was equally impressive. The squad took on the Chargers in a pair of road matches. Both games were taken by the Tommies, each with a 3-0 scoreline. Kalan Noonan led the charge in Saturday's dominance. He finished with 18 kills and three blocks. Brenton Romanchuk was an impactful player on Sunday, finishing with seven kills and two service aces. The Male Tommies have not dropped a set in the past four matches.
Women’s Hockey Tommies sweep road games
STU’s Women’s Hockey Team found success last weekend. The team hit the road for a pair of crucial mid-season matchups. They began the trip on Wednesday in Sackville and ended things on Saturday in Antigonish. Both games were taken by the Tommies. STU has three wins over their last four games.
The team began their road swing on Wednesday with a showdown against the Mount Allison Mounties. Both teams ended the first period locked in a scoreless draw. Nadia Lavoie broke the deadlock early in the second. Your Tommies scored again. The team sealed the victory with an empty net marker by Megan Kirkpatrick. STU won 3-0.
STU were back on the ice on Saturday night. The team were in Antigonish for a date with the St. FX X-Women. Alexie Palchinski opened the scoring for your Tommies late in the first period. Her first of the season was followed by the team’s second marker, a wrist shot by Lavoie midway through the second. Lavoie finished with two goals over the weekend. STU did not break in the third, despite allowing a goal. Your Tommies took down St. FX 2-1.
Basketball Tommies take care of business on the road
STU’s Men’s and Women's Basketball teams were also in action last weekend. Both teams hit the road for a pair of matches on Saturday against the Mount Allison Mounties. Your Tommies swept the weekend, taking all four points in Sackville.
The Men’s Basketball team stole the show. STU scored 59 points before the halftime break, limiting Mount Allison to 25 points. They led by 34 at the halftime break. Your Tommies continued the momentum all the way to a dominant 106-68 win. Marcus Wilson was the difference maker. He finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. The team has four straight wins to start the new ACAA campaign.
STU’s Women’s Basketball team took home a similar result. The team defeated the Mounties 59-53, in a game that was close from start to finish. STU were down 29-24 at halftime. However, the second half was a different story. Your Tommies outscored Mount Allison 25-24 over the next two quarters. The victory gave STU their third consecutive win. Katie Vidito led the charge with 14 points and six rebounds.
What’s on Tap for Next Weekend
Five teams will be in action next weekend. Three of those teams will play their games in front of the home fans, while two of the squads are set to hit the road. Next weekend is also the third last before the end of the first half of games on the STU Athletics calendar.
STU’s Women’s Hockey team will kick off the weekend. They are back on home ice for a match against the UPEI Panthers. The puck drops at seven o’clock. Your Tommies are back on home ice for an evening showdown against the Moncton Aigles Bleus on Saturday. Puck drop takes place at seven o’clock.
Three teams will be in action on Saturday. The Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tommies travel to Charlottetown for a pair of afternoon matches with the Holland College Hurricanes. Tip-off is at 12 o’clock for the Women, and two o’clock for the Men. Your Male Tommies will look to stay undefeated and continue their winning ways.
Later that day, the STU Men’s Volleyball team welcomes the UNB Saint John Seawolves for a mid-afternoon interprovincial match. First serve is set for four o'clock. Saturday marks the first time the squad has been on home court in November.
The weekend concludes on Sunday with a pair of home volleyball matches. Both the Men’s and Women’s Tommies will take on the UNB Saint John Seawolves. First serve set for 12 o’clock for the Women, and two o’clock for the Men.
