Weekend Recap February 6-8
Three St. Thomas University squads were in action this past weekend. It was a successful home stand for the volleyball programs at the LB Gym, while the women’s hockey team split their road trip through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Women's Hockey Split Weekend on the Road
STU's Women's Hockey team enjoyed a strong start to the weekend on Friday night in Sackville with a 4-1 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties. Amy Dvernichuk opened the scoring on a first-period power play, followed by a second-period surge featuring goals from Amber Daley, Tristyn Endicott, and Alexie Palchinski. Goaltender Chloe Marshall made 19 saves to secure the win. The momentum faced a challenge on Saturday afternoon in Antigonish against the StFX X-Women. Despite goals from Lauren Smith and Megan Kirkpatrick, the Tommies fell 3-2 after a three-goal second-period outburst by StFX. Katie Sweeney was busy in net, stopping 33 shots in the loss.
Tommies Volleyball Dominates at Home
The Men's and Women's Volleyball teams hosted the Crandall University Chargers at the LB Gym for a double-header weekend. The Women's Volleyball team (14-4) set the tone on Saturday with a dominant straight-sets win (25-21, 25-19, 25-22). Kathleen Boyle led the attack with 13 kills, while Cali Nadeau added 10 kills and 4 aces. On Sunday, the women completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory, fueled by a massive 24-kill performance from Kathleen Boyle.
The Men's Squad (17-1) followed with a hard-fought 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon. Mason Brewster led the way with 15 kills, supported by 45 assists from Raph Fiset. The Tommies returned on Sunday to deliver a convincing 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) to close out the weekend. The game was highlighted by a relentless service game that saw the team record 15 total aces.
What's on Tap for Next Weekend
It is a massive weekend of home action at STU as several teams look to defend home court. The women's hockey team returns to the Grant-Harvey Centre to face off against the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday, February 13th at 7:00 PM, followed by a matchup against the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday, February 14th at 3:00 PM.
Both the Men's and Women's Basketball teams are back at the LB Gym for a two-game stand against the Holland College Hurricanes. The Women's Basketball team tips off on Saturday, February 14th at 3:00 PM and again on Sunday at 1:00 PM. The Men's Basketball games follow each day, with tip-off scheduled for Saturday, February 14th at 5:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM.
The men's and women's volleyball programs head out on the road to Saint John to face off against the UNBSJ Seawolves. The Women's Volleyball team plays Saturday, February 14th at 5:00 PM and again the next day at 5:00 PM. Meanwhile, the Men's Volleyball team will take the court on Saturday, February 14th at 7:00 PM and again on Sunday at 7:00 PM.
