All St. Thomas University squads were in action this past weekend as the second half of the season continued. It was a successful stretch for the basketball and volleyball programs at home and on the road, while the women’s hockey team split their battle of the hill game against rival UNB Reds. These matchups proved vital for playoff positioning as teams looked to build momentum early in the winter semester. Fans were treated to high-stakes competition both at the LB Gym and on the road, highlighting the depth and resilience of the Tommies athletic programs. Throughout the weekend, several student-athletes delivered standout performances that helped secure crucial points in the standings.
Tommies Basketball sweeps and splits on the road
STU's Men's and Women's Basketball teams traveled to face the Crandall Chargers this weekend, bringing home three wins in four games.
The Women's Basketball team continued their dominant run with a pair of convincing victories. On Saturday, they secured a 78-44 win, led by 15-point performances from both Katie Vidito and Charlee Connors. They followed that up Sunday with a 69-36 win where Charlee Connors was a force in the paint, recording a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds.
The Men's Squad split their weekend, starting with a thrilling 121-118 triple-overtime victory on Saturday. Jeven Eddy led the way with 27 points and 18 rebounds, while Marcus Wilson added 26 points in the marathon contest. On Sunday, the team fell 81-97 despite 17 points from Wilson and a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double from Eddy.
Women's Hockey splits the battle of the hill series with UNB
STU's Women's Hockey team faced the UNB Reds in their battle of the hill matchup, earning two important points in the standings.
The St. Thomas University women's hockey team showcased their resilience in a highly anticipated home-and-home series against the rival UNB Reds, ultimately earning two important points in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) standings. The Tommies opened the weekend Friday night at home with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory. After Tristyn Endicott and Kailey Wrigglesworth provided goals in regulation to keep the game deadlocked, Jordan Chaulk netted a spectacular unassisted game-winner in overtime to seal the win and earn the first star of the game. On Saturday, the Tommies traveled to UNB and fell 1-2 in a tightly contested defensive battle. Amy Dvernichuk scored the lone goal for STU in the third period to spark a late comeback attempt, while goaltender Katie Sweeney was named the game’s third star after a stellar performance in net. Despite the split results, the weekend highlighted the competitive nature of the "Battle of the Hill" and kept the Tommies firmly in the playoff hunt.
Volleyball protects home court
The volleyball programs enjoyed a busy weekend at the LB Gym, facing the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal Rams) and Mount Allison. Both squads demonstrated high levels of energy as they navigated critical mid-season matchups in front of a home crowd.
The Men’s Volleyball team secured two hard-fought wins against the Dal Rams, showing great composure in tight sets. They opened Saturday with a thrilling five-set victory (24-26, 25-12, 17-25, 25-22, 15-7), led by a standout performance from Lucas Lavigne, who recorded 16 kills and 8 digs. They followed it with a four-set victory on Sunday (25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 25-14), where Lavigne again led the offense with 13 kills and 4 service aces, while Brayden Bruce anchored the defense with 20 digs.
The Women’s Volleyball team split their weekend results against tough competition. They began with a dominant straight sets sweep of the Dal Rams on Saturday (25-18, 25-21, 25-20), fueled by Kathleen Boyle’s 12 kills and Cali Nadeau’s 11 digs. On Sunday, they faced Mount Allison in a back-and-forth five-set battle, ultimately falling 2-3 (22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 12-15). Despite the loss, Kathleen Boyle delivered a massive performance with 21 kills and 8 digs, while Cali Nadeau contributed 16 kills and 4 service aces in the marathon match.

It is a massive weekend of home action at STU as the volleyball programs look to defend home court, while the women’s hockey team heads out on a crucial road trip.
Both the Men's and Women's Volleyball teams are back at the LB Gym for a two-game stand against the Crandall Chargers. The Women's Volleyball team tips off on Saturday, Feb. 7th at 2:00 PM and returns to the court again on Sunday, Feb. 8th at 2:00 PM. The Men's Volleyball games follow each day, with matches scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7th at 4:00 PM and Sunday, Feb. 8th at 4:00 PM.
The women’s hockey team will be looking to pick up points away from home as they travel for a pair of key weekend matchups. They first visit the Mount Allison Mounties on Friday, February 6th, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 PM. Following that contest, the team travels to Antigonish to face StFX on Saturday, February 7th at 3:00 PM.
