Springer, Rees, Cyr and Oakes Named Men's Soccer Award Winners
The St. Thomas University Tommies hosted their yearend awards ceremony on Tuesday, honoring their teams for their achievements inside the classroom and in their respective sports.
The Tommies’ men’s soccer team handed out their team awards following their historic season, with Josh Oakes, Evan Rees, Gray Cyr and Brett Springer all being named team award winners.
Oakes was named the team Rookie of the Year following a season that saw him score 4 goals in his rookie campaign, all while playing a more defensive role with the Tommies.
“Choosing a Rookie of the Year on a team with 16 rookies was a tough task but Josh stood out all year with a competitive spirit and quality that every coach looks for,” said ACAA Coach of the Year, John-Ryan Morrison. “He made timely tackles, powerful headers, goal-line clearances and key goals including a big goal in our historical with vs SAIT at CCAA Nationals. Josh's season was rewarded with an ACAA 1st Team All-Star in his first year and is certainly primed for a long and outstanding ACAA career with the Tommies.”
Rees, who was voted a team co-captain during his first year with the Tommies, only missed one game for the Tommies this season.
“He is a towering CB that has eliminated opposing teams’ best strikers all season and helps organize our backline. His on-field performances did not go unnoticed as he was named ACAA 1st team allstar as well as named STU MSOC's 1st ever ACAA Rookie of the Year. Off the field he has helped lead our young squad with his professionalism, calm demeanor, and willingness to help his teammates no matter what was needed.”
Cyr, also in his first ACAA season with the Tommies, did whatever his team needed of him on the season, playing different positions, but it was his defensive role at CCAA Championships that stood out on the year.
“Grays rookie campaign was very impressive, but because of some of the other great players on the team, some of the work he does on the field may go unnoticed, but not to his coaches. He is a tough tackler, always seemingly being in the right place at the right time defensively and loves getting stuck into tackles, disrupting and often frustrating our opponents.”
Nobody has scored more goals in the ACAA over the past two seasons than Brett Springer. This season he upped his game, scoring 15 regular season goals (10 games), 4 goals in ACAA playoffs (2 games) and then 5 goals at CCAA Championships (3 games). The ACAA Player of the Year was named team MVP and was also named STU’s Male Athlete of the Year.
“He was on a torrid pace all season, leading the league in goals and being named STU men’s soccer’s 1st ACAA Player of the Year in 10 years. Brett impressed the entire country with his showing at CCAA nationals with 5 goals in 3 games and added to his award cabinet with CCAA 1st Team Allstar as well as CCAA Nationals Tournament Allstar."
